Communications and Social Media Specialist

Reporting to the Communications and Public Affairs Manager, the Communications and Social Media Specialist supports the Mitacs Communications team across Canada by contributing to and delivering on Mitacs's brand and content strategy on social networks. The role is responsible for developing and curating engaging multimedia content (text, image, and video) that will increase brand awareness and reputation.

Mitacs's social media channels are key to our impact strategy. The position works with various departments and connects with external partners, including government funders, post-secondary institutions, and enterprises, to showcase Mitacs's impact on the Canadian innovation ecosystem.

The ideal candidate can manage complex organizational structures and build relationships with cross-functional teams. They have a proactive approach, great project and time management skills, and ability to multitask. Passion for social media, strong attention to detail, openness to continuous learning, and ability to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced environment are imperative for success in this role.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the Communications and Public Affairs Manager, lead the implementation of the social media strategy
  • Seek opportunities to engage with Mitacs partners and government funders through social media, and collaborate closely with Strategic Partnerships' colleagues to identify key messages
  • Create campaigns and social media content that demonstrates impact of Mitacs to key audiences and stakeholders
  • Monitor all social media channels daily, and produces on-brand, engaging content (text, image, and video)
  • Follow issues management protocol, including working with Communications and other relevant teams to respond when needed
  • Liaise with Marketing and Communications colleagues and participate in cross-functional meetings to coordinate and curate content
  • Produce social media reports and make data-driven recommendations
  • Collaborate on special projects, and support other teams as needed


Skills, Abilities, and Experience:

  • A degree or diploma in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field with at least three years of social media experience
  • Experience with post-secondary institutions and/or government funding agencies is a strong asset
  • Experience in executing social media strategy in a corporate environment
  • Proven experience connecting with different audiences and building an organization's brand on social media
  • Excellent writing, editing, speaking, and presentation skills, with an eye for detail and ability to create compelling and creative content (text, image, and video)
  • Understanding of graphic design principles and experience with graphic design tools such as Canva
  • Ability to effectively coordinate multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities, and to monitor various social media platforms concurrently
  • Proficiency with a multi-social posting program such as HubSpot or Hootsuite
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, designers, consultants, etc.
  • Experience in analyzing and reporting data using integrated analytics tools on HubSpot, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and/or Instagram
  • Ability to balance being a strong team player with working independently in a fast-paced and flexible environment
  • Written and verbal fluency in French is an asset
  • Interest in public affairs and government relations is an asset
  • Knowledge of the latest social media features, trends, and best practices

Hiring Range: $67,915 - $75,905

Only in rare and exceptional circumstances, where a candidate has the experience, skills, and expertise that far exceed those required for the position, would we consider paying above the hiring range for this role.
