It operates eighty-nine superstores under the banners Chapters and Indigo and one hundred twenty-two small format stores under the banners Coles, SmithBooks, Indigospirit and The Book Company.

Employees
Indigo possesses an Indigo Code of Conduct that sets the tone of how business is to be conducted. It sets the standards and expectations for all employees, including management and the Board of Directors, and is considered binding and adhered to by everyone who works at Indigo. Indigo employs over 6500 people across Canada in various positions. Current positions for hire include customer service representatives and managers.

Working environment
Indigo provides its employees with a base salary plus a bonus usually available for most employees. It also provides a health and wellness plan, employee discounts, flexible hours, a company matched RRSP program, three weeks paid vacation and recognition programs such as yearly employee scholarships. There is also professional in-store training as well as at-home online training.

Corporate culture
Indigo believes in giving back to the community and its stakeholders. In 2004, it created the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation to provide high-needs elementary schools with new books and learning materials to encourage literacy. It commits $1.5 million annually to schools across Canada through money raised by customers, staff, suppliers and proceeds from Love of Reading fundraising efforts. 100% of the monies collected are distributed to the schools while operating costs for the Foundation are absorbed by Indigo. Since inception, $28 million has been collected and distributed to over 3000 school libraries across Canada. Additionally, Indigo’s month- long annual Adopt a School program allows each store to collect donations during that period and apply them to a local school.
